Journalist – Erongo

Job Purpose:

Produce relevant, compelling and factually correct news and feature content for a particular publication to deadline, daily, weekly or monthly. May write across a broad range of subjects.

Minimum Requirements:

• Diploma or degree in Journalism, Languages or Media Studies
• Experience writing for a mainstream newspaper or magazine
• At least 1 years experience
• Good general knowledge
• Knowledge of particular target market of the publication
• Knowledge of topical issues and current affairs
• Proficient in relevant computer software packages and application
• Passion for media, knowledge of current affairs
• Established network of contacts
• Valid driver’s license

Main Responsibilities:

• Performs tasks assigned by the news editor, Chief Reporter to ensure wide news coverage of local events
• Investigate and research article content for news and/or feature stories to add value to the paper
• Write quality news and feature articles, adhering to strict deadlines to conform to the style guide of the paper
• Create target-market-specific articles and generate feature ideas to serve the readers’ community to maintain wide community based interest.
• Adhere to the quality , style and content standards as laid out and required by the particular publication so that standards can be maintained throughout
• May be required to assist and support junior permanent staff to assure development of juniors
• Generate and liaise with network of contacts to assist with research or completion of articles/features
• May be required to assist with layout and other production related tasks as part of own personal professional development and ensure smooth news room operations
• Take photographs to illustrate editorial content
• Produce content for online and other platforms to give readers wide access to the content of the paper
• On standby at all times (weekends, after hours and public holidays) to report on breaking news.
• Able to travel extensively to give coverage of news events outside the main centre of operations (e.g. Windhoek, Swakopmund, Oshakati)
• Comply with the requirements of the Namibian Press Code to ensure ethical behaviour at all times
